Leader jerseys handed over between team-mates after stage 2

Louder & Rachetto take the lead

After Burke Swindlehurst (Navigators) and Becky Broeder (Intermountain Cycling) won the Men Pro/1/2 and Women Open events on Day One of the five-stage Ecology Center Classic, it was expected that the rest of the men's and women's fields would step up and challenge them in today's Burke & Associates, CPAs Perma Road Race. But, as it turned out, the biggest 'challenge' on this day came from their own teammates, as Jeff Louder and Liza Rachetto made it two for two for the respective teams in the 2003 Ecology Center Classic.

Perhaps in part because of Stage One being shortened, the Pro/1/2 Men's field was feeling especially frisky today, which would explain why a six-man breakaway attacked virtually from the gun and had gained six-and-a-half minutes before the end of the first of two 52-mile loops. But that was as much time as they were allowed to get; once the second lap began, the Navigators team of race leader Swindlehurst took up the chase, with New Zealander Glen Mitchell and the Belgian-domiciled Jeff Louder doing the lion's share of the work. Though they lost Mitchell, who popped on one of the two Category 3 climbs the racers did per lap, the breakaway was caught. . . and then the real race began. Louder attacked, covered by teenage sensation Angetti Sheldrake (5280/Subaru Development) and Marc Bomhof (Ciclismo/Headwinds), and that was the race; the field, which thought that it would catch the trio in the valley after the final climb, never saw them again till the finish, by which time Louder had won by five seconds over Sheldrake, with Bomhof in third. Second-overall Colby Pearce (5280/Subaru Development) won a 12-man group sprint for fourth, followed closely by Rusty Beall (Health Net) and yellow jersey wearer Swindlehurst. Overall, Swindlehurst retained his 40-second advantage over Pearce.

As for the women, it was a much closer race than yesterday's solo win by Broeder. In fact, Broeder actually missed today's move, losing 52 seconds to several potential challengers. It was a bit of a surprise, particularly given that the day started off quietly enough, with no serious attacks until the first climb, when the first separation began. One rider who fell off the pace- quite literally- was Broeder, who crashed during the ascent and had to put in a big effort to get back in contact with the lead pack. It was an effort that would cost her later, as Broeder was dropped on the second climb of the day, which saw the front group whittled down to just six racers. But things were still going right for the Intermountain Cycling team, as Broeder's teammate Liza Rachetto took the six-up sprint from Katheryn Curi (Los Gatos Bicycle Racing Club), with Renee Eastman (Vitamin Cottage Cycling) snagging third. Broeder would end up finishing eleventh on the day. Overall, Broeder would remain in first place, with Rachetto moving up to second at 2:06, and Team Stampede/Five Valley Velo's Eva Karau slipping into third place at 3:09.

The 2003 Ecology Center Classic continues on Sunday, May 25 with two stages: the Missoula Bicycle Works Time Trial and the Frenchtown Circuit Race.
