Stage 3 of the Giro Cosenza started along the coast and looped inland to cover 3 mountain climbs. The tempo was kept high all day limiting the possibility of any breaks going far down the road. The Australian team concentrated on keeping Gene Bates as fresh as possible for the last 15km climb to the finish. Gene was still suffering after effects from his stomach problem and was down on horsepower but managed to stay with the front group until the final 3km of the climb and limit his losses to retain his young rider jersey and drop only 1 spot on gc to 10th. The stage was won by Antonio d'Aniello from Podenzana.
