Today's stage of Giro Cosenza started with a very tough first 40 km where the pattern of the race was formed. Peter Dawson went with the first attack of the day and was joined on the big 20km climb by Gene Bates who came across with all the favourites to form a 22 man break. Gene then went away with a group of 6 but couldn't hold their pace and dropped back to a 7 man chase group. Peter and the rest of the original break were swallowed up by the main group. Gene struggled all day, suffering from a stomach bug, but managed to stay with the 2nd group which caught 2 of the original 6 in the front group. That left 3 in front with Andris Reiss from Pagnoncelli to take the stage. Gene ran 10th and moved to 9th on the GC also leading the young rider's competition.
