19th Tour de l'Aude Féminin - 2.9.1France, May 16-25, 2003Main Page Results Photos Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - May 18: Rieux Minervois - Rieux Minervois, 115kmBy Kristy Scrymgeour Lyne Bessette (Saturn) won today's stage of the Tour de L'Aude, when a late counter attack to join her teammate Manon Jutras succeeded, and the pair, taking Anita Valen (Bik-Powerplate) with them, powered away to take two minutes on the chasing field. The stage, which started and finished in Rieux Minervois, traveled 115km through the countryside and quaint villages of Southern France, taking in a 7km, category 1 climb, midway through the race. In the lead up to Col de Jouys, the Saturn team with Ina Teutenberg, began the onslaught of attacks making the race aggressive from the start. At one point she was away for 15km with a small group but others refused to work. "It was very frustrating, they came with me in the break but they didn't pull through, so I just kept attacking" Teutenberg told Cyclingnews after the race. Efforts from Jutras and Katie Mactier were also noted, but the field remained together at the base of the climb. Leading into the climb Petra Rossner (Nurnberger) and Teutenberg set a fast pace to set up their respective teammates. On the climb itself, the pace was fast enough to split the field into quite a few bunches with Valentina Polkanova leading the way. "Polkanova set a really good rhythm up the climb" said Bessette "but eventually she looked back and there were still 24 girls in the group so she slowed down a bit". The lead group of 24, containing the major GC contenders, reached the summit in one piece but were caught on the descent as the two front groups came back together creating a lead bunch of 36 riders. Then the attacks began again. Manon Jutras, coming off a successful US campaign, where she won the overall GC in the Redlands Classic, made her move when she followed a French rider and gained a 30second gap on the forty. Before long, however, the French rider tired from the pace and fell back to the field. Meanwhile at in intermediate sprint with 17km to go, Valen attacked with Bessette on her wheel. "I looked back and there was nobody with us so I just kept going" said an excited Bessette. Bessette being a favourite for this race, prompted Team 2002 Aurora RSM, who held the leaders jersey, and a few other concerned teams to chase in an attempt to contain the break, but the half hearted effort was not enough and by the finish line the trio had a two minute lead. Bessette managed to take the win from Valen with the help of Jutras, moving up to second place overall in the General Classification, but Valen will wear the jersey, 3" ahead of Bessette due to prologue on day one. Bessette was elated with the win "I was very happy with my sprint because I know Valen is a good sprinter, but Manon [Jutras] did such a great job and there was a head wind, so I waited till the very last moment to come off Valen's wheel". As Bessette acknowledges, it is early stages yet. "It's a good start, but I'm going to need to be very smart and listen to Ina [Teutenberg] who keeps telling me not to waste stupid energy". With many veterans of the race commenting already that this looks to be one of the hardest Tour de L'Aude courses to date, Bessette is right to think about conserving. Tomorrow takes the riders over two category 1 climbs and a cat 2 before the riders contend with a double day on Tuesday and the 31km Time Trial, often called the race of truth, on Wednesday. Australian Director Sportif, James Victor, commented to Cyclingnews today that "it is going to be a very interesting game of tactics", taking into consideration that the penultimate stage, seven days from now, features two hors category climbs and a category 1 climb. So, it is early days with a lot of action remaining. It will be not only a matter of who has the best form, but matter of who uses their energy at the right time, a game of smarts.
