Marcuz Moreau takes the stage, Kachalka will wear yellow

Sandrine Marcuz Moreau (French National Team) has won the first road stage of the Tour de l'Aude, beating Ukrainian Natalya Kachalka (Team 2002 Aurora RSM) in a two up sprint in Port La Nouvelle. After attacking early, the pair managed to hold off the peloton and finished with1'30 to spare in the 123km stage. That gave Kachalka the Maillot Jaune, as she had a faster prologue time than Marcuz.

The pair used the category 2 climb, Col du Prat, to make their winning move and managed to gain a quick 3'50" over the peloton. Not seeing the two riders as an immediate threat, the bunch did not begin to chase until later in the race when the Nurnberger team went to the front in an attempt to bring the break back for their sprinter and race leader Petra Rossner.

"We didn't want to chase too hard early because we knew there was another climb coming up," Nurnberger's Margaret Hemsley told Cyclingnews.

As the chase went on, a second group of three including Iolanta Polikevicuite and Luisa Tamanini (2002 Aurora RSM), and Valentina Karpenko (Velodames -Colnago), attacked with 50km to go. "This was dangerous for us," said Hemsley, " we had to bring Judith to the front to chase, as we had lost two of our riders on the last climb".

Nurnberger managed to catch the three, who were then counter attacked by Lyne Bessette (Saturn). Luckily for Nurnberger, they had the help of Alison Wright (Australian National Team) with this one, and Bessette was caught, which left the bunch in one piece except for the original break of Kachalka and Marcuz Moreau who were still up the road.

Kachalka and Marcuz rode into the town of Port La Nouvelle with a very safe lead. It was Marcuz Morrea who took the stage win from Kachalka in a town that is not too far from her home town in the Midi Pyrenees. Marcuz Moreau recently placed second in the Grand Prix de Grimpeur, France, showing her strength in the hills, which could be of concern to over the next few days for GC riders who were happy to let her get away today.

"Today was one of the most terrible races I have done," said Nurnberger's Judith Arndt, who was second coming into the stage. "I can't explain why, but it was hot and humid and I didn't expect it to be that hard. I was worried about Sandrine, I don't know how she time trials, but she is a very good climber, it was dangerous to have her out there. But, we are happy that we don't have the maillot jeune anymore though, it is too early in the race and it is too much work for us. Our goal is to win this tour but it doesn't matter which one of us wins. Trixi [Worrack] is also riding well right now, so we will see".

Going into tomorrow's stage, Kachalka wears the leader's jersey, as she finished 10" ahead of Marcuz Moreau in yesterday's prologue. Stage 2 tomorrow is a 115km course that starts and finishes in Riuex Minervois. It travels over a 7km category 1 climb which will be an early indication of which climbers have the form to be in contention for the overall General Classification as the tour continues.
