Deutschland Tour - 2.2Germany, June 3-9, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - June 7: Ravensburg - Feldberg, 191 kmCrushing win by ONCEAzevedo moves into overall leadBy Jeff Jones An impressive display of strength from the ONCE-Eroski team has seen them claim five of the top six places in the fifth stage of the Tour of Germany, considered the toughest stage of the Tour. Jose Azevedo and 2002 Tour of Germany winner Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano crossed the line first and second, followed by Isidro Nozal and Jörg Jaksche, with only Michael Rogers (Quick.Step) in fifth preventing a clean sweep of the top five for ONCE, as not far behind the Australian was Alberto Contador. The result was also reflected in the general classification, with Azevedo wearing the leader's jersey going into tomorrow's critical 40 km time trial. All of the ONCE riders are known for their time trialing abilities, although if Michael Rogers has an incredible day he could take back the necessary 42 seconds. The 191 km stage started in Ravensburg with 113 riders, after Saeco's Gerrit Glomser pulled out to ride the Tour of Austria on Monday, and fakta's Michael Skelde also didn't take the start. There were three climbs to be tackled, including a Cat. 3 in Ewattingen (km 111), and two Cat. 1's in Todtmoos (km 166) and Feldberg (km 189/finish). There were plenty of riders keen to get away at the start, and it was Jan Hruska (ONCE), Bram Schmitz (BankGiroLoterij) and Kurt Asle-Arvesen (fakta) who succeeded after 7 km, building a lead of nearly a minute by the 24th kilometre. Jan Kuyckx (Vlaanderen-T Interim) set off after them, but it was too late to bridge the gap and he was caught in no-man's land behind the break and ahead of the field. The peloton didn't want to let Arvesen get too far in front, as he was only 2'28 down on Gregory Rast on GC and considered a dangerous rider. However there was a lot of hard riding to come, and after the leaders covered 44.3 km in the first hour, their advantage was over seven minutes. It grew to 12'00 by 67 km, with Kuyckx still stranded 1'40 behind the break. The Belgian started to fall back, and was absorbed by the Bianchi-led peloton at km 107, while in front, Hruska had stopped working and the break also began to lose ground. The work from Bianchi (for Jan Ullrich) was relentless, and the break brought back to 3'50 by km 143. A counter attack by Haselbacher (Gerolsteiner), Jaksche (ONCE), Stangelj (Fassa) and Botero (Telekom) around this point stirred up the peloton even more, but Bianchi kept its high tempo and no-one was able to escape. In front, Schmitz and Arvesen rode away from their non-working colleague Hruska just before the Cat. 1 climb at Todtmoos, but by this stage the peloton was breathing down their necks at a minute behind. Jaksche was the first to close the gap, but Arvesen hung onto him to eventually take the mountain points at the top of the climb. Schmitz also survived the climb, and over the top got together with Arvesen, Cancellara and Kessler in pursuit of Jaksche, who had attacked and was now leading the race on his own. The peloton, still with Bianchi in front, caught this group before a revitalised Hruska went off with Jan Verstraeten (Vlaanderen) in pursuit of Jaksche. With 11 km to go, Jaksche had 25" on the chasing pair with the peloton at 40". The attacks in the peloton were constant to the finish, with Vinokourov, then Azevedo setting off behind Jaksche on the final climb. Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano bridged up to Azevedo as Vinokourov dropped off, and suddenly there were three ONCE riders leading the race. Azevedo and Gonzalez caught Jaksche with 5 km to go, with a group forming 30" behind them containing Rogers and Sinkewitz (Quick.Step), Nozal and Contador (ONCE), Voigt (Credit Agricole), Wesemann (Telekom), Aebersold (Phonak), and Rebellin (Gerolsteiner). However they could not close the gap, and it was clear that ONCE would dominate the stage placings. Jaksche had to let go with just over a kilometre to go, leaving Azevedo and Gonzalez de Galdeano to contest the stage win. Azevedo took it, with Jaksche getting caught by teammate Nozal just before the end to finish fourth. Race leader Gregory Rast lost 3'36 and moved out of the jersey, while Jan Ullrich finished 18th at 1'24, and could be moderately satisfied. PhotographyImages by AFP Photo
