Rogers into lead with powerful TT

23 year old Australian Michael Rogers (Quick.Step-Davitamon) has given another demonstration of his time trialling skills by winning the third stage of the Route du Sud, a 33.3 kilometre test against the clock between Saint-Gaudens and Montrejeau. On the technical and hilly parcours, Rogers rode a time of 44'57 to beat French road champion Nicolas Vogondy (FDJeux.com) by 1'51 and Stéphane Barthe (MBK) by 1'56. On the GC, Rogers is also 1'51 in front of Vogondy, with Alessio's Pietro Caucchioli in third at 2'16.

"The parcours of the time trial was tricky without even one metre of flat," said a satisfied Rogers, recent winner of the Tour of Belgium and the Tour of Germany. "The roads were very narrow and dangerous, making it quite easy to make mistakes. I was very careful and thankfully everything turned out well."

Rogers has a very realistic chance to defend his lead in tomorrow's tough climbing stage between Montrejeau and Barousse, finishing atop the 1755m Port De Bales. He has shown what he can do on the smaller climbs, but the big mountains are more of an unknown. "Tomorrow there are two climbs roughly half way through the race and the finish line is at the top of a 15 kilometre climb that has an average gradient of roughly 9%," he said. "I will really have to give my all to defend my title. I just hope that it won't be too hot tomorrow."
