Nature Valley Grand Prix - NEUSA, June 12-15, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - June 14: Winona road race, 106/79 milesSaturn dominatesMactier, Rapinski in stage wins and leader jerseysMen: Rapinski takes six-man finaleSaturn's Belorussian strongman Viktor Rapinski won today's men's stage of the Nature Valley Grand Prix in a race powered by an early break by his team-mate Tim Johnson. Johnson attacked early on and was joined by Cameron Evans, though he later dropped Evans on the circuit's decisive climb. After building a gap that peaked at 4:15, Johnson was reeled in by a Navigators-led peloton until the bunch was close enough for several riders to bridge and join him. On the second time up the climb, Mark McCormack and Ivan Dominguez (both Saturn) broke away and built a 40 second gap before being joined by a chasing group that included Rapinski, Tom Danielson (Saturn), John Lieswyn (7Up/Maxxis), Ciaran Powers (Navigators), Adam Bergmann (Jelly Belly), and Jacob Erker (Schroeder Iron). Saturn played tag in the lead group as McCormack and Dominguez dropped off and Trent Klasna arrived. The chasers soon caught Johnson, and with four Saturn riders in the break it looked unlikely that anyone else had a look-in. After Bergmann crashed and dropped back, it was Saturn vs Lieswyn and Erker. The yellow-and-red riders tried to lose them, but Lieswyn and Erker were having none of it, and in the finale Saturn led out Rapinski to take the win ahead of Lieswyn. Women: Mactier rides powerfully to stay in RedBy Kristy Scrymgeour Stage four of the Nature's Valley stage race saw a win by Katie Mactier as she soloed away from a small break to finish 20" ahead of the chasers. This victory ensures that she keep the leaders jersey for another day, and with only a criterium remaining in the tour puts her in a comfortable position to win the tour tomorrow afternoon. Today's course was the Winona Road Race and consisted of a 30 kilometer loop of which the women completed 2.7 times after riding 19 kilometers through the fields to get to it. At the end of the loops the riders had 6.4 kilometers to the finish line. Within the loop was a climb made difficult by the crosswinds at the top. Early in the race, opportunist Melissa Sandborn (ICO), knowing that she was no threat to the GC thought she would try for a stage win. She broke away and was joined eight kilometers later by Jennifer Stevens (Vaniqa). The two were strong and gained a significant gap on the field until Katrina Grove (T-Mobile) attempted to bridge, prompting a chase from the field. Lyne Bessette (Saturn) used the climb to force a pace that only a few could hold. By the top of the climb the three leaders were caught and soon after only five riders remained. Bessette, Mactier, Manon Jutras Saturn), Karen Bockel (Rona) and Katrina Berger (T-Mobile) formed the break that would produce the winner. The three Saturn riders, realized their advantage in the break and Bessette and Jutras worked hard to open up the gap. Diet Rite Team, Victory Brewing and Nurnberger chased from behind as the gap hovered between 30 and 40 seconds As the race neared the finish, Saturn started their attacks with Jutras and Mactier taking turns to counter moves. It was an attack by race leader Mactier that would be the decisive move of the day. Rona's Bockel chased hard with Jutras on her wheel, but to no avail. The strong ride by Mactier put her 20" in front by the finish line, to secure the red leaders jersey. Jutras took the four-up sprint at the end from Bockel. Bessette finished 8" later followed shortly thereafter by Grove rounding off the top five.
