Tim Hortons (Canadian) National Championships - CNHamilton, Canada, June 27-30, 2003Day 1 - June 27: Time TrialsBessette and Wohlberg win Time Trials on Day 1Individual Time Trials were the order of opening day for the Tim Hortons Road National Championships at Hamilton, Friday, June 27. Morning riders inaugurated the 15km. "Short" course while riders off in the afternoon used the 21km "Long" circuit. The urban loops were described by participants as, "technical, spectacular and safe." Organizers of the World Road Championship will welcome these comments with enthusiasm. The Tim Hortons Road National Championships are serving as a dress rehearsal fro the October and the general consensus after the first day was positive. In the Elite Men's event on two laps of the long circuit for 42kms, Eric Wohlberg of Ontario pulverized the course and thereby his adversaries on his way to winning an eighth consecutive individual time trial title. With an average speed of 46 km/h. despite the four climbs and gusting wind, Wohlberg clocked a time of 54:50, leaving Swein Tuft (BC) 2'18 behind. Jean-Francois Laroche (QC) was third with a time of 57:33. Automatically selected for the World's Time Trial, Wohlberg is aiming for a place, "among the top 20. I would be happy to finish in the top 15 to 20 positions. This course suits me but we're talking about the World Championships. I'm realistic." Lyne Bessette of Quebec shone in the Elite Women's race capturing a second title in three years. "I had a big day. The course was perfectly secured and I was able to do the full distance in my zone, without worries about potential hazards. For the 21km. Bessette registered a time of 29:18 seconds to depose former Canadian TT champion, Geneviève Jeanson, who was second by 25 seconds. "I was ordinary today," explained Jeanson laconically. Anne Samplonius (QC), a former silver medalist at the World Championships in the time trial, was third at these Nationals in 30:03. "I gauged my efforts well and caught Clara Hughes who started one minute before me. That contributed to my success," said Samplonius. Dominique Rollin and Geneviève Leblanc, both of Quebec were winners in Men's and Women's Espoirs categories, respectively.
