18th GP Cycliste de Beauce - 2.3Canada, June 17-22, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Stage 6 - June 22: Saint-Georges - Saint-Georges, 154 kmTesar wins stage with Lieswyn holding on to overall winBy Kristy Scrymgeour Lubor Tesar (Ed's Systems - ZVVZ) won today's final stage of the Grand prix de Beauce in an exciting plot that saw all the riders who had been aggressive all week give it one last shot for a stage win. Tesar won three stages of this tour in2002 and this year he has been just as active. Involved in several breaks throughout the tour working for his teammate Tomas Konecny, this one finally came through for him when he and three others were able to stay away from a chasing field and he out sprinted the small group to take the win. John Lieswyn and his 7UP-Maxxis team were also able finish the tour on top after a long hard week which consisted of many hours chasing down potentially dangerous breaks. Lieswyn took his first tour win for the season with Chris Baldwin and Konecny coming in second and third respectively in the overall General Classification. How it unfolded On another beautiful spring day in St-George, Quebec, the peloton faced a challenging 154 km course over an 11km circuit. Organizers decided to shorten the race due to a delay to the start, however 14 times around the circuit which included a hard 2.5km climb, was enough to make the race too hard for many. Once again, as has been the pattern in this year's tour, and early break of seven riders escaped the field and gained a quick couple of minutes on the field. In the break were Irving Aguilar and Joel Alamillo (Tecos -Mercurio), Lubos Kejval (Ed's System-ZVVZ), Burke Swindlehurst (Navigators), Bert Scheirlinckx (Flanders-IteamNova) and Ryan Roth (Jet Fuel). As the race progressed Lubor Tesar (Ed's System-ZVVZ) and another Tecos Mercurio rider, David Solomon Alvarez broke away from the peloton in an attempt to bridge to the break. The two caught the break, but before long Alvarez was dropped with his two teammates and Kejval and Roth. Four remained in the break and held a minute on the field as 7UP-Maxxisa and Health Net chased. The determined Swindlehurst attacked the small group as the others waited for the peloton. He kept the gap at over a minute and was caught by Tesar, Svein Tuft (Prime Alliance) and Jeff Louder (Navigators) and the three gained another minute on the bunch. More aggression rose out of the bunch as Todd Herriot (Health Net) broke away to take up chase. Not far behind him were Charles Dionne (Canadian National Team), Trent Wilson (Flanders IteamNova) and Andrew Davidson (Jet Fuel). With 15km remaining in the race Herriot and Dionne were with the leaders making a front group of six, soon to be whittled down to four when Swindlehurst and Herriot fell off the pace. With only a lap remaining the four were forced to work hard to stay away from the chasing bunch, with Dionne doing the majority of the work. In the end, after a long day in the saddle, it was Tesar who managed to out sprint the group with Dionne and Louder finishing behind him in second and third place respectively. With the exciting Grand Prix Cycliste de Beauce completed, some teams will head to Boston for the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic which begins on Thursday whilst others will remain in Canada for the Canadian National Championships.
