18th GP Cycliste de Beauce - 2.3Canada, June 17-22, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - June 20: Saint-Georges - Mont Mégantic, 172 kmKonecny magic up Megantic, Lieswyn keeps leadBy Kristy Scrymgeour Tomas Konecny (Ed's System ZVVZ) benefited from his aggressive team plan today when he bridged up to the leaders on the final climb up to Mont Megantic with tour leader John Lieswyn (7UP-Maxxis) and took the mountain top finish and the fourth stage of the Grand Prix Cycliste de Beauce. Again the race panned out to be another carbon copy of previous stages where an early break rode off the front for the majority of the race before being caught near the finish. The first break, which occurred very early in the race, was reeled back in only to have the gutsy Canadian Cory Lange (Canadian National Team) counter the move and break away alone. Before long however, six others joined him, including his teammate Chris Isaac, Lubor Kejval (Ed's System ZVVZ), Dave McKenzie (Flanders IteamNova), Oleg Grishkine (Navigators), Jason Lokkesmoe (Health Net), and Martin St-Laurent (Trek-Volkswagen). The group of seven powered away, with Grishkine and Lokkesmoe often sitting on, due to the fact that they had their team leaders behind in the bunch. They gained over five minutes on the field leaving 7UP-Maxxis to chase once again. Cyclingnews heard from a happy Lieswyn this morning before the race. "The team is working very hard for me every day on the front. A spirited defense of the jersey, to say the least. They've been on the front now for 250kms and hauled back over 15 minutes in breakaways." Today the 7UP-Maxxis team spent more time at the front, and with the help of a few other teams, reduced the gap to three minutes by the base of the climb. By this stage Hejvel and Grishkine had broken away from the lead group and the remaining five had been caught by the peloton. It was now time for Lieswyn to defend his leader's jersey alone. Climbers began to attack including Lieswyn and Dominique Perras. Eventually it was Lieswyn and Konecny alone with Chris Baldwin (Navigators) attempting to bridge with Petr Bencik (Ed's Systems ZVVZ) on his wheel. Konecny and Lieswyn were too strong however and arrived at the top of the mountain with 11" to spare on Bencik and Danny Pate (Prime Alliance) and another 25" on Baldwin. Konecny took the win leaving Lieswyn happy to keep the jersey after the hardest stage of the tour. Tomorrow is a double day of racing with the 15.5km Time Trial in the morning and a 60km criterium in the evening in St. Georges.
