Stage 1 - June 17: CMQ Lévis - Québec, 125 km

Lieswyn Takes First Stage

By Kristy Scrymgeour

John Lieswyn (7UP-Maxxis) won the first stage of the Grand Prix Cycliste de Beauce today in an aggressive stage that saw a lot of action. Lieswyn followed the wheel of Chris Baldwin (Navigators) when he attacked from a small group of 13 near the end of the stage and was able to win the two up sprint.

The stage was a tough 125km circuit race starting from the Saint-Laurent River's South shore, before crossing the river and taking the riders nine times up Cote Gilmour, Quebec.

7UP Maxxis were early aggressors in the stage with New Zealander Greg Henderson breaking away with Irving Aguilar (Tecos Mercurio) gaining four minutes on the peloton. As the break stayed away, others such as Jeff Hanson(Atlas Cold -Italpasta), local rider Frederic Millette (Espoirs de Laval) and Cory Lange (Canadian National Team) attempted to bridge the gap but were always quickly reeled in by the bunch.

The break gradually lost time on the peloton as teams began to chase and just after the intermediate sprint the two leaders were caught by a small group of about 13 riders. Aguilar started to feel the effects of his long day away and was dropped from this front group not long after.

With the racing nearing the end attacks were frequent and the leading group of 13 was split into two, a lead group of 8 gaining 18 seconds on the field and over a minute on the rest of the peloton. With only a few kilometers to go, Baldwin attacked taking Lieswyn with him and the two powered to the finish. Lieswyn took the sprint over Baldwin with Tomas Konecy (eD'system-ZVVZ) edging out Eric Wohlberg (Canadian National Team) for third place.

Tomorrow's stage is a169km that starts and finishes in the town of Levis. It is an undulating stage that seems to be primarily down hill towards the end.
