The International (Tour de Toona) - NEPennsylvania, USA, July 28-August 3, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - July 31: Hollidaysburg Circuit Road Race, 60 milesCrash puts yellow jersey out of the men's race, Jeanson moves a bit closerBy Kristy Scrymgeour Burke Swindlehurst (Navigators) and Geneviev Jeanson won today's circuit race at Hollidaysburg. Swindlehurst succeeded when he broke away solo at the end of a long four-man break and held off the bunch. Jeanson's waited until the end today and made her move in the bunch sprint.. The Men's race was marred with crashes in today's stage with the yellow jersey, Nathan O'Neill (Saturn) being taken to hospital after a crash in the lead up to the sprint with 300m remaining in the race. O'Neill had been taken to the hospital for surgery. The Hollidaysburg circuit race is a 60.3 mile race consisting of three 20.1 mile laps starting and finishing in downtown Hollidaysburg. The course is undulating through fields and forest with a few sharp pinches and eventually climbs over a steep 1.5 km KOM before descending back down for the final couple of kilometers to the finish. The final 500m of the race are slightly uphill. Once again today and early break formed which consisted of Andy Jaques (Sierra Nevada), Burke Swindlehurst (Navigators), Jason McCartney (7UP-Maxxis) and a Scott Zwizanski (Snow Valley). Immediately the Saturn team began pace making at the front of the peloton keeping the gap always under 1'30". The break worked hard and kept the gap going into the last lap. If Saturn could keep the gap low, the yellow jersey was not in danger, however the Mountains jersey was, which forced the Saturn team to help Tim Johnson (Saturn) take 5th place points in the mountain sprints. This wouldn't be enough to keep him in the jersey, but it would at least keep him close. In the final lap an unfortunate crash back in the bunch caused a bit of upset for a few. John Lieswyn who went down hard unable to avoid a fallen Chris Balwin (Navigators), suffered a broken chain with no neutral support and the misfortune that his team car was up the road following the break. Eventually the team car was able to come back to him and Lieswyn chased to get back into the race. In the break, Swindlehurst attacked coming over the final climb with 5km to go and got a convincing gap on the other three. Jaques (who was also in yesterday's long break) began to feel the hills and fell of the back, being caught by the field not long after. Zwizanski was dropped from McCartney and was also caught by the field. Swindlehurst took the win and McCartney was able to hold of the chasing bunch to take second place. The final bunch sprint was where the second crash of the day dampened the race. Brice Jones was leading out his teammate Oscar Pineda (7UP-Maxxis) as Horner came up alongside him to lead out O'Neill. As Pineda moved over slightly to let in the yellow jersey on the road, he was pushed from the other side. The fighting for position also saw O'Neill being pushed from his side and the two slammed into each other and went down hard. Managing to miss the crash, Jones went forward to take the bunch sprint for third place. Due to the fact that the spilloccurred within 1km to the finish there was a chance that O'Neill may have been able to start tomorrow wearing the yellow jersey, despite not finishing the race, however that option has become a non possibilty as an MRI has determined O'Neill has a broken C2 and he has been rushed to Pittsburg for Surgery. The leader's jersey therefore returns to Baldwin going into stage five. The women's race wasn't quite as dramatic and it wasn't until lap two that the attacks began. Nicole Demars (Victory Brewing) and Melissa Holt (Rona) broke away from the field and gained almost three minutes in a very short time. Charmain Breon (LCV Trek VW) is her usual aggressive style attacked to try to bridge with Tania Duff Miller (Diet Rite) but didn't quite make it to the leading pair. Back in the bunch Saturn put their riders on the front to bring back the break to protect the Team GC and by early in the third lap all riders were caught and the peloton was once again all together. Attacks continued, but the riders came over the final climb at Chimney Rock in tact. Laura Van Gilder was the first to kick in the final sprint to the finish, however Genevieve Jeanson (Rona) was able to come around her and hold it to the finish with race leader Lyne Bessette (Saturn) finishing in second place in front of Van Gilder. Jeanson's win brings her a little bit closer to Bessette in the General Classification, but Bessette still leads by 27 seconds going into stage five at Martinsburg. Martinsburg circuit race is a relatively flat course comparing it to the rest of the week. It makes four laps of 20 miles through Amish fields and returns to town each lap with a very technical section of corners before it turns left for the final sprint to the finish.
