The International (Tour de Toona) - NEPennsylvania, USA, July 28-August 3, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - July 30: Johnstown-Altoona Road Race, 100 milesBessette and O'Neill take the leadBy Kristy Scrymgeour Saturn riders, Nathan O'Neill and Lyne Bessette won today's significant stage of The International on the long relentlessly hilly day from Johnstown to Altoona. In both events the riders made their move late in the race, and finished solo with 13 and 34 seconds to spare on the chasing bunch respectively. The stage is the first of two 100 mile days in the tour and manages to put the hurt on immediately with a steep climb just out of the town of Johnstown. The course then takes in the short sharp undulations typical of the region before reaching the major climb of the day towards the end of the race. In the Men's race Doug Ollerenshaw (Broadmark Capital Cycling) and Andy Jaques (Sierra Nevada) were the brave early aggressors, attacking immediately on the climb out of Johnstown. Tim Johnson (Saturn) bridged to the pair and forced the pace putting the Navigators team on the defensive immediately. The trio gradually built up their lead gaining a seven minute gap on the field as they approached the major climb of the day. It was then that the bunch put the pressure on and began to chase hard. By the bottom of the climb the gap was down to 5'30" and closing. Johnson's rhythm on the climb was enough to drop his two companions and they fell back to the field and a new break of four attacked in pursuit of Johnson. In the group was Adam Bergman (Bianchi/Grand Performance), race leader (Chris Baldwin) and two of Johnson's teammates, Tom Danielson and Nathan O'Neill. As Johnson crested the hill he still had a small gap as O'Neill attacked the chasing group and bridged up to his teammate. Soon it was O'Neill alone, as the rest of the break got caught by the peloton which continued to chase O'Neill into town. The fast finish made it difficult to hold of the fast peloton, but he managed to stay out there and finish 13 seconds up. Winning the bunch sprint for second place was Scottie Weiss (West Virginia) in front of Chris Horner (Saturn). O'Neill's win earns him the yellow jersey going into stage four as Baldwin moves down into second place in the General Classification, 22" down. In the women's race it was actually the race leader Genevieve Jeanson who made the early attack, only 3 miles into the race. History dictates that an early move by Jeanson could be dangerous so Bessette caught her wheel and was able to go with her for a while, but the pressure from Jeanson was too much and Bessette soon fell back to the field. Today however, Jeanson was not able to hold off the chasing bunch and before long, she too came back to the field. Using the next opportune chance to attack was Ina Teutenberg (Saturn), quickly covered by Magali Le Floch (Rona-Esker). Le Floch sat on Teutenberg to protect the yellow jersey of her teammate as Teutenberg forced the pace for 60 miles. As the pair reached the major climb of the day Le Floch was able to ride away solo. The climb was also the cue for Jeanson to attack. Once again Bessette went with her and this time was able to stay there as Jeanson did the work to move up to her teammate Le Floch. Following the instructions of her team director, Le Floch waited for Jeanson, losing a valuable lead on the road. Soon after the three came together, the chasing group of 20 riders closed in and a lead group of 21 were all together. Saturn began to attack again to put the pressure on Jeanson, who had only two teammates left in the bunch. Heather Albert (Team Basis) and Kori Kelli (Diet Rite) were also aggressive and Jeanson was forced to chase time after time. Eventually with 5km remaining in the race, Bessette made her winning move and gained a quick gap on the field. The recently crowned Canadian National Time Trial Champion used her skills to take it all the way home, finishing 34 seconds in front of second place. Defending tour champion, Heather Albert also made a late move to finish in second place with Le Floch a few seconds behind her in third. Trailing Le Floch by two seconds, Lynn Gaggioli took the bunch sprint for fourth place. Bessette will now wear the yellow jersey going into stage four and now leads Jeanson by 32".
