Day 2 - July 12: Otto Grunski Menasha Classic Criterium

Out of Harm's way

Reporting by Superweek

The Otto Grunski Menasha Classic Criterium concluded in exciting fashion in Menasha, Wisconsin with two-time Superweek champion Harm Jansen attacking late for a solo victory. The race was contested in ideal conditions on a flat triangular course in front of an estimated 5,000 spectators in downtown Menasha as part of the Otto Grunski Days festival.

An early break comprised of Dan Ramsey (Sierra Nevada), Danny In't Ven (Belgium), Ivan Dominguez (Saturn), and Frank Pipp (Athletes By Design) escaped with 37 of 80 laps completed and built a sizable lead. By the latter stages of the race the leaders had closed within sight of the back of the main field and appeared destined to gain a lap. But, as the race wound down three riders, Jansen (Holland), Paul Martin (West Virginia Pro Cycling), and Dale Sedgewick (Bianchi-Grand Performance) launched an aggressive chase and quickly ate into the lead.

With 6 laps remaining, the three chasing riders caught the four leaders. With the strong sprinter Dominguez in the break, Jansen was unwilling to see the race come down to a sprint and launched an attack just as the two groups came together. The other members of the break managed to reel him in initially, but two laps later Jansen attacked again and rode to the finish line with a comfortable lead. Dominguez won the sprint for 2nd place followed by the Belgian In't Ven. Jonas Carney finished 11th to retain the overall lead and the yellow jersey. Frank Pipp claimed the red jersey for the lead in the sprint points competition.
