Dean claims final stage and overall title

New Zealander Julian Dean (Team CSC) clinched the overall title at this year's Tour de la Region Wallonne, thanks to back to back stage wins in the final two days of racing. Equal on time with Michele Bartoli (Fassa Bortolo), Dean was given the overall victory due to his higher placings throughout the five stage event.
"This is the greatest victory of my career," an overjoyed Dean said after his win. "I've proven that I can be a top sprinter, even in bunch finishes."
In the stage 5 finale, Dean outsprinted his top rival, an in-form Michele Bartoli, who had assumed the race lead after the toughest stage on Wednesday, a rainy 200km march through the Wallonne hills, territory that has smiled on the Tuscan veteran in the past. Bartoli even punctured in the last 15km, but with his team's help was not only able to rejoin the field but also challenge Dean for the sprint. Attacks in the last kilometres by the likes of Christophe Agnolutto and Dave Bruylandts did nothing to dissuade the sprinters and the race ended with a mass charge to the line.
With time gaps narrow between the leaders, however, Bartoli did not have a comfortable lead, and Dean thrust himself into contention with the first of his two stage wins Thursday, before equalling Bartoli on time thanks to bonus seconds and his second stage win in as many days. Consistent riding throughout the five stages gave Dean an uncontested victory on points.
