Giro del Due Province - NEPisa, Italy, July 19, 2003The Gene MachineBy Brian Stephens, Australian U23 Team Manager Last Saturday 19th July saw one of the best performances I have seen from the team in Italy in the Giro Due Province near Pisa. Gene Bates won his first Italian race and three other Australians finished in the top 10. The Aussies were in every move and our numbers in the main break made it easier for Gene to make the final break of three and go on to take the sprint for the win. Bernard Sulzberger had his best result in Europe to run 4th with Lee Godfrey running 6th. Jon Cantwell, who only arrived in Italy this week, beat the other finishers home to claim 10th place. David Betts was 14th and Brendan Cato retired from the race with a nose bleed.
