Aitken wins Grampians and takes series lead

Sydney Gold Medal Olympian Brett Aitken has snatched the overall lead after winning the second race in the prestigious Tattersall's Cup Cycling Series.
Aitken won the Great Grampians Little Desert Classic after reeling in a spirited breakaway group. Aitken, who is trying to impress National selectors of his worth for next year's Athens Olympics is using the Tattersall's Cup Cycling Series as a quality preparation for the coming track season.
Shane Kirby and Gary Parsons were the drivers of the early breakaway group and Aitken had to call on all his reserves to peg them back. Raced over 126 km, the Great Grampians event pushed riders to the limit, not with hills, but with sheer pace.
In a tight sprint to the line, Aitken outgunned Kirby... but not by much. Hector Morales of Uraguay took fourth spot, with Matthew Rix and the durable Tim Decker filling fifth and sixth respectively.
Aitken now leads the Tattersall's Cup series by just one point from Parsons, while the consistent Dominic Gatto is third, a further point behind. Former dual winner Robert Tighello is yet another point away in fourth place.
