Tour of Qinghai Lake - 2.5China, August 10-17, 2003Stage 1 - August 10: Xi Ning circuit, 87 kmKam Po delivers the first blowAn quality field of 126 international riders took to the start line in Xi Ning today, with national teams from Italy, Canada, Australia, Russia and the Ukraine all represented, with riders from Spain, Belgium and France also participating. The Tour of Qinghai Lake is the largest cycling event in China, and the opening stage began with a circuit race on a 8.7 kilometre circuit that was to be completed 10 times. The fast pace throughout prevented any breakaways until the closing laps, when an group of four riders inlcuding Kam Po Wong (Marco Polo), David McKenzie (Flanders-iTeamnova) and Matteo Carrara (Italian National Team) managed to escape. Although a climbing specialist, Wong boasts a particularly fast finish, with the Hong Kong rider managing to outsprint Australian McKenzie and Carrara for stage honours.
