GP Linz - Passau - Budweis - 2.7.1Austria, August 29-31, 2003Stage 1 - August 29: Budweis - Bad Leonfelden 141.9 kmBy Brian Stephens, AIS U23 Team Manager The 2003 edition of the International Under 23 GP Linz-Passau-Budweis (GP Linz) began on Friday, August 29 in northern Austria. The AIS Mapei Aqua Australian team here consists of Gene Bates, Aaron Kemps, David Betts, Peter Dawson and Jonathan Cantwell. Canberra's Rory Sutherland is riding here with his Rabobank team. The start of the race was marred by the tragic death of a police motorcycle rider who was escorting the race convoy to the start in Budweis. All the teams decided that the first stage would be neutralised until it reached the point of the accident where the riders would stop for a minute silence before racing as a mark of respect for the policeman. This left just over 50km to race and this was raced at a furious pace. (average speed includes the 90 odd km neutral) Gene Bates placed 3rd in an intermediate sprint and gained a one second bonus on GC. A small group of four riders went clear with 20km remaining and the bunch could not run them down before the line. Italian National team rider, Vicenzo Nibali took the win from his breakaway companions, with Aaron Kemps beating the bunch in to take sixth.
