McCormack, Jeanson take first stage

Mark McCormack (North Easton, MA; Saturn) and Genevieve Jeanson (Lachine, PQ; Rona/Esker) repeated their victories of yesterday in stage 1 of the Mad River Valley Green Mountain Stage Race; the Moretown Circuit Race.
McCormack has won this race in each of the previous 2 years it had been held, and he made sure that this year would be no exception as he got into a break with Mark Walters (Milford, PA; Navigators), Cameron Hughes (Yorktown Heights, NY; Lemond Fitness/Cra-Z Soap), Tim Johnson (Knowlton, PQ; Saturn), and Alex Lavallee (Sherbrooke, PQ; Trek/Volkswagen) and the top of the 2nd KOM sprint.
With the top 3 overall riders included in the group, the motivated group managed to maintain the lead, despite several attempts from riders in the field to bridge. The break did eventually stay away; but unfortunately for Lavallee, he wasn't part of it as a flat tire on the last lap cost him a chance at the race win. The remaining 4 sprinted to the line where McCormack won for the third time in 3 years in front of Walters, Hughes, and Johnson.
The field came in nearly 4 minutes later with Ciaran Power (Denville, NJ; Navigators) taking the field sprint for 5th. Finishing amongst the field were Vermont riders Kevin Bouchard Hall (34th), Ben Silverfarb (47th), David Sachs (48th), Jason Baer (49th), Bret Williamson (52nd), Ben Kubas (55th), Chris Hrenko (57th), Andrew Knight (63rd), and Will Letendre (70th).The women's race was once again dominated by Jeanson, as she powered away from a group of 5 right after the last points sprint to take the win. The race opened up right from the drop of the flag, as Julie Hutsebaut (Hull, PQ; Equipe du Quebec) and Kristen Lasasso (Rona/Esker) went clear on the downhill from the QOM. With Lasasso keeping the break in check, a group of 4 including Jeanson, Katheryn Curi (Rona/Esker), Amy Moore (Mississauga, ON; Team Ontario), and Brooke Ourada (Rona/Esker) bridged up to the lead 2 and the winning move was formed.
The group grew a lead of nearly 3 minutes before Jeanson attacked the breakaway after winning the 2nd points sprint and never looked back. After their team leader was gone, Curi and Lasasso broke the chase group in half taking Moore with them and leaving Ourada and Hutsebaut to return to the charging field. Moore got a little revenge at the finish by outsprinting Curi and Lasasso for 2nd place but the day again belonged to Rona, with 2 podium spots and 3 out of the top 5 places. Anna Milkowski (East Chatham, NY; Gearworks/Spin Arts) won the field sprint for 5th. Amanda Tucker (Montpelier; Verizon Wireless/Cervelo) was the only Vermont rider to finish, placing 53rd.
Tomorrow's stage 2 is the epic 104km classic, the Sugarbush Chamber Mad River Road Race. Mark McCormack's 22 point GC lead and Genevieve Jeanson's 35 point GC lead will be tested by 3 major climbs including the infamous Appalachian Gap, which ends at a 18% grade in the last kilometer.
