43rd GP Citta' di Felino - 1.6Italy, August 14, 20032002 Results Results Past winners Australian Team ReportBy Brian Stephens, AIS U23 manager The AIS Mapei Aqua Australian team was in Felino near Parma for a 159km race with a UCI ranking of 1.6. The team consisted of Gene Bates, David Betts, Aaron Kemps, Peter Dawson, Mark Jamieson and Lee Godfrey. Aussie Dave McPartland was there with his Italian team, Bibanese. The weather was hot as it has been for three months now and the course consisted of 18 laps of a 5.5km, mainly flat circuit, followed by a 15km circuit with a big climb to be completed four times. Our boys were active from the start with first Peter Dawson getting into the early break, then being joined by Gene Bates and David Betts. The group was now 36 riders and didn't look like being caught but for a big effort by the Italfine team, which destroyed most of the main group. The riders remaining on the front group fought it out over the last two ascents with two riders from Pagnoncelli getting clear to take 1st and 2nd. Gene Bates rode well to run 8th as did David McPartland in 9th. Consistent David Betts finished 20th.
