Redlands Classic - NECalifornia, USA, April 1-6, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - April 5: Beaver Medical Group Criterium, 90/60min.Two for Teutenberg; Horner and O'Neill tied for 1stBy Chris Baldwin The criterium stages of the Redlands Classic served more as a buffer between two grueling circuit races than as any kind of GC showdown. On a technical 8-turn, inverted parallelogram course more resembling a fancy European paperclip than anything else, the crits were a grand event but made for rather ho-hum racing. The women raced 60 minutes in 60 degree weather and mostly sunny skies. The wind was blowing, but with so many turns, a headwind was just as soon a crosswind or a tailwind, and so not quite a factor. Ina Teutenberg and Catherine Marsal put two seconds on the pack early in a kind of symphonic overture foretelling things to come. Their action snapped the peloton, leaving Manon Jutras (Saturn) out of the lead group and back with the chasers. She bridged and caught back on quickly, but stayed on at the back end of the lead group for the remainder of the race. "For me there was no specific goal in this race," said Jutras. "Just stay safe and keep myself for tomorrow." When sprint points became available, Nicole Freedman (Ind) beat sprint leader Kelen Keliy (TDS) and launched mountain bike racer Susan Haywood (Ind), who stayed near the front to take several primes. "I really just tried to go to the front to test the legs and make my entry fee back," said Haywood. "I'm definitely looking forward to getting on to the dirt. This is fun, but mountain bike racing is more my cup of tea." Also patrolling the front, and at times leading charges through the turns, was overall race leader Genevieve Jeanson (Rona-Esker). Though not necessarily interested in points or primes, or for that matter a stage victory, she nevertheless intended to be among the leaders throughout. "At the back you are suffering because everybody brakes and turns," said Jeanson. "You always have to go hard and catch. It's too much trouble. I just like to be in front because you're the first one in to the corners, and you just roll through." Saturn and T-Mobile took turns trying to ride off the front, sending Dede Barry (T-Mobile), and Laura Van Gilder (Saturn) after multiple primes with the intention of trying to stay away. However, Ina Teutenberg did go and stay away, and it stuck, scrambling the defenses of T-Mobile and Rona-Esker. As the race came down to into the last five laps, T-Mobile rider Kim Anderson flatted and came out of the lead group. "After five laps to go you can't have a free lap," said a disappointed Anderson. "We were trying to get someone off to bridge up to Ina. All of a sudden it [the tire] started getting soft; I made it to the pit and chased for five." It came down to Teutenberg and Marsal, who bridged a 10-second gap, and together they began taking turns. The corners kept things honest, and when the two women came around the second to last turn, Marsal was in front. "We didn't have enough time to play cat and mouse," said Marsal. "It turned out that at the last corner I was in front a bit. Whatever I might have tried, it would have been difficult to beat Ina." "It was hard when I was out there alone," said Teutenberg. "I don't think I would have been able to keep them off without Catherine." Tina Mayolo-Pic (Diet Rite) won the field sprint to place third. Men: One serious case of déjà vuThe men's race was really just one long, fast parade through the turns. At times Prime Alliance led, and at others it was Schroeder Iron in defense of Miguel Meza's sprinter's jersey. Saturn came to the front with seven men one time, placing them all at the tip of a very long peloton. Chris Horner took off after a sprint points lap and stayed off. He had been defending the time bonus available, as Jonathan Vaughters (Prime Alliance) could have threatened Tom Danielson's overall GC had he won the sprint. "I felt good," said Horner. "So I just thought I'd keep going to try an tenderize some other legs and save the sprint at the end for somebody on our team with fresh legs." That tactic appeared to have worked, and as the wind picked up and the sun began to go down, the temperature dropped into the 50s as Charles Dionne came around the last corner. Bumper to bumper with Gord Fraser (HealthNet) and Miguel Meza (Schroeder Iron), Dionne won a slightly uphill, headwind sprint. "I wasn't watching anybody," said Dionne. "Gord's fast, but my teammates set a good tempo in the last laps. With two or three corners to go there was no way anybody could win against us." Horner's mid-race move gained him the time bonus, tying him with teammate Nathan O'Neill for the overall GC lead. Going into tomorrow's circuit race, it is still a Saturn triumvirate ruling the leader board, but with just one day left, it will be a go-for-broke kind of day for many others.
