Attacking Jeanson takes another, Lieswyn best in canny break

Genevieve Jeanson attacked at the first climb of the Panorama Road Circuit Race Friday, testing the depth of her competition on a 20 percent grade that pitched up and over green fields next to a busy Interstate 10. When she looked around and saw what she had wrought, she was pleased with her move but shocked by the hill.

"I had a 25 and I used it," she said. "Yesterday I was thinking, should I take just a 23, or a 25? I was happy with a 25."

The rest of the race leaders responded, with T-Mobile's Kim Bruckner and Amber Neben, Manon Jutras and Lynne Bessette of Saturn, and Felicie Greer of Velo Bella out and chasing. 20 seconds separated those four from their quarry, and when they caught her on the long downhill and straightaway leading back to the start-finish, the race was on.

"At that point we knew that there was a lot of racing left," said Neben. "We knew how strong Genevieve was, so it was just a matter of keeping our heads up. It was a tough, flat, straight almost downhill section. It's hard enough to get a gap, plus she's a savvy rider, and she was quick to get on people's wheels. At that point we were back to the climb again, and she was ready to put the hammer down again, and she did."

Jeanson rode over and up the next climb solo once again, this time with no intention of looking back. Bessette, Jutras and Neben were the only meaningful chasers left when Bruckner came off on the climb.

"At that point it was just the two Saturns and myself," said Neben. "And with Kimberley being up in the GC, it was a question of do I wait and help bring her back up, or do I sit on? They wanted me to sit on, so I just sat on those two."

"Only Lynne and I were working to catch back up to Genevieve," said Jutras. "Amber was sitting on our wheel. At the last lap and a half, Amber started working with us, but it was too late at that point. The gap was increasing."

Ultimately the gap increased to 2:26. Bessette and Jutras finished with Neben in tow, and Kim Bruckner came in 6:15 behind the leader in 5th. As a result, Bruckner dropped a place on the GC, slipping to 5th behind teammate Neben.

Perhaps the unluckiest rider in the women's race was Kelli Emmett, who flatted, bungled her wheel change, got a replacement wheel with a measly 23-tooth cassette and then took a wrong turn on the course. All within the first 5k of the first lap.

"I was feeling really good this morning," said Emmett. "And I was excited about the day. I got a flat tire and it wasn't a real fast wheel change, partly due to my fault. I went to the left hand side of the road instead of the right. A total rookie move. I chased and chased, but they put a 23 cassette in there, which is pretty tough for that steep climb. I needed a 27. I came down and the guy was saying 'Turn right. Turn right,' and pointing. But he was talking to the car behind me. I went right and rode a while before I realized where I was. I'm here for training, for mountain biking, so it's not that bad."

Jeanson said after the race that when the breakaway caught her on the first lap, she was calculating the odds of a counter-attack while she rode alone and defenseless.

"It would have been ideal to have been with either one of the Saturn riders, because I knew they wanted to put some time on Kimberley. But Kim was there, so I said 'Oh my god, I don't think this is an ideal situation.' And I knew they were going to attack me, and since the gap was not huge, I just kept the pace. In my head I was preparing for counterattacks."

"I chased and decided to put the pressure on at the hill," she added. "When you go hard for a long time and you get to those climbs, that's not the same thing as in training. In training you don't go easy, but you don't go as hard as in a race."

Men: And then there were four...

Lieswyn gets it

When the men's race rolled out and took an early lap around Redlands proper Friday morning, the group was compact and the riders were fresh. When it ended Friday afternoon, the men were split up in to 6 or 7 groups, and the peloton's last man, Jason McCartney (7up/Maxxis) was only two minutes ahead of the leaders at the start-finish line. He still had one whole lap of the 10-mile circuit Panorama Road Circuit Race to go before he would be able to join in the celebrations of his teammate John Lieswyn's stage victory.

The combined effects of distance, gradient and fatigue seemed to be most responsible for the men's break-up. At the front were Glenn Mitchell (Navigators), who tried to solo away in the last lap, and the men who caught him with 2km to go: David Clinger (Prime Alliance), Trent Klasna (Saturn), Danny Pate (Prime Alliance), and Lieswyn.

"We were working good for a lap," said Mitchell. "And I could sort of feel the other guys were suffering on the climb. Instead of playing around, I thought I'd give it a shot on the climb, hoping one other guy would come with me."

"It was a brutally hard attack," said Lieswyn. "When he went I didn't even try to respond, because I thought of the Olympic trials in '92, when I did the same thing as Mitchell and lost."

The group started working, struggling up the third of four climbs on the course some 20 seconds in Mitchell's wake. When they crested the fourth and final hill, and all that was left was a long, straight, downhill barrel-roll to the finish, their fruit was ripe and ready for picking. Mitchell's move was no more.

"All I could do was go as hard as I could, to try and fend them off," said Mitchell. "I got caught with 2k to go. Live and learn, I guess."

Early breaks in the six-lap circuit were led by a combination of Prime Alliance and Navigators' attacks, with Saturn's Klasna patrolling the front. First Matt Decanio and Michael Creed went, followed by Burke Swindlehurst and Mitchell. When this had gone on long enough, Roland Green (Trek VW-All Stars) put his hat into the ring, bringing Jonathan Vaughters (Prime Alliance) along with him.

"I was in the wrong spot when Roland attacked," said Danny Pate, who had been dispatched to assist Vaughters. "Roland kept driving, and I don't know if that was the greatest time for me, because I was kind of on the eight-ball."

Klasna stayed near but not at the front, ensuring that the GC positions of his teammates Nathan O'Neill, Chris Horner and Tom Danielson were never in jeopardy.

"We could have had any three of those guys come up if they wanted to," said Klasna. "But if they would have come up, Roland would have come up."

With two laps to go, KOM points were at stake, and KOM leader Clinger was watching Number Two on the list, Adam Livingston (Schroeder Iron).

"I was killing myself up the wall to keep up with those guys," said Livingston. "Then Clinger sat up, and I jumped. I came on to the inside of that U-turn and started sprinting. Clinger came on the outside and started sprinting. It was a drag race up that last 200m and Clinger just got me."

That KOM sprint proved decisive for the race, in that when Livingston and Clinger created a 50m gap, four chasers in the form of Mitchell, Pate, Klasna and Lieswyn came along.

"It was rough," said Livingston, who sat up after the KOM and could not stay with his own break. "My legs didn't have it today. That was an incredibly difficult circuit."

For the next two and a half laps the five riders were alone. Mitchell attacked on the final ascent of Panorama Point and in doing so burned his matches.

"I was extra-pleased," said Lieswyn. "Because he was probably the guy I feared most in the sprint. He gave it everything, and he basically took himself out of the equation for the sprint as far as I was concerned."

In the final straightaway it was a fast and wide charge; Clinger waited for Mitchell, who sprinted first. Pate was off the back, Klasna could not put himself past his competitors. Clinger and Mitchell switched positions, and the nervous Clinger sensed that in order to beat Mitchell, the man to his immediate right, would mean certain victory. He ignored the 5m of space to his left.

"At the finish I just messed it up," said Clinger. "I didn't time it right, too small of a gear, and I looked right."

Clinger beat Mitchell. But Lieswyn, looking right at the only man he had to watch, threw his bicycle across the line and won. He beat Clinger by less than half a wheel.

"I just waited and waited and waited," said Lieswyn. " I knew that I was undergeared, because I only had a 12-cog, and that was because we needed the super-low gear for that wall. For this kind of course the ultimate would be to have an 11-26, or 11-27. But you can't have your cake and eat it, too. Knowing that I only had a 12-cog, I had to be super patient."
