Winn floats to victory

Julian Winn, after finishing the Tour of Serbia with two stage wins, the points jersey and fourth overall, travelled back to the UK just in time for the National Elite Road Race Championship and as he admitted afterwards, he had one of the those days where he was "floating". Julian attacked non-stop and still had the power to take advantage of the rivalary between the Compensation Group riders Tanner and Lovatt, and the European pros, with none wanting to take the other up to him. The only rider who did respond to Julian's attack over the final climbs was Tom Southam who countered on a rise, found himself clear and he said afterwards, just buried himself, closing the gap on Winn to 12 seconds with Jeremy Hunt, last year's champion, winning the sprint for third. Despite the rain, and the World Cup Football, large crowds formed around the circuit to watch what was an exciting race where the home riders showed they can compete with their European-based counterparts. Congratulations to the hard working Carl Lawrenson on a job well done.

Junior Men (Cublington, Bucks)

Continuing the Compensation Group RT domination of British road racing this year, Kendal's Steffan Wilson took top honours in the National Junior Road Race Championship's held on the rolling 12.5 mile Cublington circuit in Buckinghamshire on Sunday.

Wilson proved to be the strongest man on the final climb of the day at the end of the 6 lap, 75 mile promotion organised by the Milton Keynes based Team Keyne-Trek to collect the champion's jersey by one second ahead of Ritchie Bowen (Liverpool Century RD) and Craig Cooke (Cardiff Ajax CC).

Unlucky Adam Duggleby (Steve Goff RT) had to be satisfied with fourth overall having pulled his foot out of his pedal in the final drag to the chequered flag when in second place.

A field of 52 riders started the race in the warm but windy conditions and 2001 champion Peter Johnston (Exeter Wheelers) was one of the first to show his face at the front but his leading group was joined by the rest of the peloton as the race came to the end of the second lap.

There were a number of attacks that resulted in the winning move forcing its way to the front by half way round the fourth lap after nearly 2 hours racing out of which the final selection of 10 riders was formed on lap 5.

The only other rider to join this elite group was Matt Brammeier (Liverpool Century RC) who made a Herculean effort on the final lap to join the front of the race. As he started his pursuit the leaders were just under 2 minutes ahead of the field but Brammeier overcame that deficit with less than 5 miles to go to be awarded the race organiser's prize for Ride of the Day from Bob Varney.

Local man Martin Quill (Team Keyne-Trek) put in a number of attacks in the final lap to try to pull away but each time he was pulled back with Cooke often prominent in covering Quill's moves.

As the field approached the final climb Brammeier could be seen at the back apparently waiting to launch an final effort but as the road continued to rise he was unable to go through to the front. The whole race spread across the road as the line approached and it was Wilson who held back his effort to the very last to take the chequered flag and possible World Championship selection.

"I've felt good in the last few weeks" said the tired but delighted Wilson after the finish "so as we came up the hill for the final time I just gave it all and never looked back. I knew I could do it and the thought of selection for the World's was always on my mind."

Four of the Five Team Keyne-Trek riders to start the race finally crossed the finishing line. Despite attacking on the last lap, Quill was suffering from cramp in the final stages of the race and the uphill sprint for the chequered flag proved to be an effort to far and was disappointed with his final eighth place overall. ,p> William Smyth nearly fell off his bike after crossing the finishing line in 16th place after an excellent performance whilst Andrew Scopes was also delighted with his 21st place, "I wasn't able to do much training before the race as I've been concentrating on my 'A' level exams," he said "so I think this was a great result".

Chief Commissaire Colin Docker was very appreciative of the efforts of the marshal's at the end of the race. "They did an excellent job and worked very well with the motorcycle marshal team which was provided by the Bedfordshire Police Motorcycle Club."

Neil Walker (Assistant National Coach for the Men's Endurance squad with special responsibility for the Junior road team) was present and after the race was talking to the eight riders who've satisfied the criteria for selection for this October's World Championships. "I've got a special training session with those riders this week and should then be able to finalise the six riders who'll be going to Zolder."

Ritchie Bowen (Liverpool Century RC) only turned 16 this February so was one of the youngest riders in the field. "I really only entered the race for the experience" he said, "so second place overall is more than I could have expected. On the final lap I knew Matt was coming across so I was really waiting for him to join us but when all broke loose in the final sprint I just went for it."

Craig Cooke (Cardiff Ajax CC), no doubt to be haunted by the "brother of multi-world champion Nicole Cooke" tag for some time, was philosophical after the race. "Many of the riders in the final selection didn't seem to want to race at the end. I'm not sure if they were just tired or the strong wind had taken its toll. I hoped the group would split up in the final lap but I don't think the course was tough enough. I wasn't all that confident before the race so overall I can't be too disappointed, third in the road championships and third in the National cyclo-cross, its got to be a good season."
