Snerf's slant: The 2004 Nicole Freedman Diary

Sprinter, 2000 Olympian and a founder of the Basis women's team, Nicole Freedman - known as Snerf to her friends - is one of the US circuit's great characters. Her goal for 2004 is to make the Olympic team for Israel and failing that "to see one of my developmental teammates win their first NRC race and subsequently take all their prize money."

Breaking news...

Basis wins Cascade Twilight Criterium and takes third in second stage

This timely news/ race report, featuring information dating back almost two months ago, should be helpful to anyone who just emerged from a century long cryogenic freeze.

July was a casual rest month. Basis women competed 16 days in July: the Fitchburg Classic in Fitchburg, MA (proud home of the "slinky" inventor), the Cascade Classic in Bend, OR (best Mexican food north and east of Redmond, OR) and "The International", located in central Pennsylvania's Altoona, a fast emerging international tourist destination spot.

A family somewhere in Mongolia (please excuse any translation errors): "Honey, what were we thinking. I'll cancel the around the world tickets to Mexico's Mayan ruins, Swiss Alps, Zimbabwe's Victoria Falls. We must go to Altoona's internationally acclaimed Walmart and Park & Ride Amusement Combo Center. This is so exciting. They even have a $.50 off coupon with the biggie fries upgrade."

Basis women rode to victory in Cascade's Twilight Criterium. Kate and Chrissy delivered Nicole to the line for first. "My teammates could have braked and I would have still won. I think I will try this next time." Two days later, Chrissy took her second podium spot of the season, finishing third in the Old Mill Criterium.

Basis had strong rides at The International and Fitchburg with Kristin Johnson and Chrissy leading the team in the overall classification. "I bet if I flat Chrissy's tire, I can beat her," schemed an anonymous Basis teammate.

Special welcome to new team sponsor Ford Motor Company. For those unfamiliar with the company, they make matchbox cars for kids and other products I will have to look up. Special thanks to Larry, Jenna, Barb & 'Larry", Sunnyside Sports, and our professional staff of Kate's mom, Chrissy's parents and Chrissy's sister. "If the jersey fits (around your wrist) you are hired."

Upcoming events include:

8/15/04 Manhattan Beach
8/22/04 US Criterium Championships
8/24-8/29 Estes Park Cycling Challenge
9/4-9/6 WCCC Atlanta 10 K
