Stage 5 Notes
* The peloton had to contend with pouring rain during the stage.
* Jalabert gained a 12 seconds bonus for his 1st place finish.
* The stage was easily controlled by Jalabert's and Zuelle's ONCE team.
* Dane Bjarne Rijs broke away in the closing kilometers but was caught.
* Alvaro Mejia (Motorola) was reported to have broken his collar bone in a
bad crash, and is out of the race.
* Tomorrow's (Friday) 264 kms 6th stage between Orense and Zamora is the
longest of the Vuelta.
