Motorola Report from the Dutch Criterium Nacht Van Almelo

Max Van Heeswijk proved once again that he is one of the revelations of
the season when he garnered his sixth victory of the year in the night time
race at Almelo. He was in a small group that escaped the pack towards the
end and the young Dutchman easily out sprinted his breakaway companions.
The Dane Bo Hamburger took second and Erik Breukink third. Van
Heeswijk's teammate Wiebren Veenstra completed a good evening for the
Motorola boys by taking seventh place.

La Francaise des Jeux a Non-Starter

After the happiness of last week, with Sorensen and Riis signed up,
sadness for prospective manager Marc Madiot and the riders he has engaged.
French state-owned lottery La Francaise des Jeux will not sponsor a team.
the announcement from FDJ was short and to the point:
"La Francaise des Jeux was studying the possibility of creating a
professional cycling team. After seeking the decision of its ruling
authority, the Secretariat of State for the Budget, it is abandoning the
project."
FDJ communications chief Christiane Stahl, who expressed herself
dismayed on behalf of the riders and Madiot, said the Secretariat had made
it known that "this investment was not a priority".
Cyrille Guimard, the Castorama manager, who has himself been seeking a
sponsor to keep his team going has thrown in his two cents, repeating his
objections to what he regarded as Madiot's predations on his team. He had
vehemently disapproved, he said, "of Madiot's methods of despoiling my
team" (his "losses" included Francois Simon).
Bjarne Riis commented on the collapse of FDJ: "This project was
serious, the team well structured and I really wanted to be involved. As
for Cyrille Guimard, he hasn't behaved correctly. He phoned me time and
again to throw scorn on the project, and although I don't now know where
I'll be next season, it's certainly not going to be with him."

Tour of Poland (Open)

The 130 kms Stage 1 was taken by TVM's Stephen de Jongh (Netherlands)
from Brescialat's Mauro Radaelli (Italy).

Vuelta Snippets

** GAN's Pascal Derame failed to make the start of the Vuelta after
almost colliding with a police car that was travelling in the wrong
direction around the time trial circuit. Derame was warming up at the time.
Derame braked hard and avoided the car but landed on his face on the
pavement. The next morning, said team-mate Cedric Vasseur, Derame looked as
if he'd had a "bout with [Mike] Tyson during the night".

** Time trial winner Abraham Olano has prepared carefully in Indurain
style for the Vuelta. "The week before the start," he said, "I rode each
day for six to seven hours in the French Pyrenees, logging up five ascents
of the Tourmalet, five of Luz-Ardiden and two of Hautacam."
