Lynch Outed for Dope

South Africa's Shawn Lynch, who was suspended from British events for 12
months following a positive drugs test, has been stripped of his British
keirin title. Lynch holds a British racing license. He was found to have an
excess of the permitted ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone in his
urine.
Lynch lost the crown he won on 2 August 95 after the British Cycling
Federation decided to make the ban effective from the date of the offense.
Lynch, 21, was given a drug test following a meeting at Leicester in
June, but the ban originally ran from the date the result was announced --
after he had won the keirin championship at Manchester.
Today the BCF threw out Lynch's appeal against the ban and back-dated it
to the original offence. Originally, on the advice of the world governing
body, the Union Cycliste Internationale, the Federation had decided that to
avoid the threat of legal action against them the ban should not be
backdated.
The move follows protests from the Scottish CU, whose rider Steve
Paulding was beaten by Lynch in the keirin championship. Paulding has
subsequently been awarded the gold medal in the event.
A statement from the BCF today confirmed that Lynch would be
disqualified from the Leicester meeting in June and "from all other BCF
events in which he competed in the period from 4 June 95 until the initial
hearing of the case on August 5."

UCI Rankings

This the top 10 of the latest UCI rankings.

  1. Tony Rominger	SUI	Mapei-GB 3230.00	(1669)
  2. Laurent Jalabert	FRA	ONCE 2195.80 (1662)
  3. Miguel Indurain	SPA	Banesto 2098.40 (1570)
  4. Alex Zuelle SUI	ONCE 1528.80 (996)
  5. Johan Museeuw	BEL	Mapei-GB 1475.40 (988)
  6. Claudio Chiappucci	ITA	Carrera 1344.40 (595)
  7. Evgeni Berzin	RUS	Gewiss 1265.20 (659)
  8. Maurizio Fondriest	ITA	Lampre 1095.40 (627)
  9. Fra. Casagrande	ITA	Mercatone-Saeco 1047.20 (571)
 10. Andrei Tchmil	MOL	Lotto 974.44 (612)

The bracketed figure is how many points the rider has earned this season.
Which highlights how the allocation of points is stacked in favour of the
major tours. Rominger has won just 8 times this season compared to
Jalabert's 20-odd wins. Yet Rominger, through his dominance in the Giro,
has earned more points.
