Ullrich, the first German to win cycling's most prestigious race, and his partner Rolf Aldag came third in an 84 km team time trial in the southern city of Karlsruhe.
Current Belgian world champion Johan Museeuw and Swiss Oskar Camenzind won, ahead of Frenchman Eddy Seigneur and Italian Andrea Peron.
``You can't always win,.. said Ullrich, who said he was drained after appearing in races and exhibitions all over Germany since his Tour triumph in July. ``The last few weeks have been really exhausting,.. he added.
Ullrich will miss next month's world road championships in San Sebastian, Spain and resume training late in October in Merdingen, the small town in the Black Forest where he lives.
