Lance Armstrong should signed with US Postal
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- USA Cycling has announced the athletes who will comprise its team for the 1997 UCI World Road Championships, Oct. 7-12, in San Sebastian, Spain.
Leading the senior men’s team will be a trio of Tour de France finishers, Bobby Julich, Glenwood Springs, Colo.; Tyler Hamilton, Nederland, Colo.; and Marty Jemison, Salt Lake City, Utah. Julich finished 17th in the Tour de France this year and was 11th in last year’s world championship road race. Rounding out the road race squad are Tour DuPont stage winner Chris Horner, Lemon Grove, Calif.; Thrift Drug champion Frank McCormack, Leicester, Mass.; and CoreStates Classic winner Chann McRae, Austin, Texas.
Julich will also compete in the individual time trial along with national champion Jonathan Vaughters, Englewood, Colo., the top-ranked rider in the U.S. National Racing Calendar standings.
The women’s road team will be led by USPRO women’s road race champion Karen Kurreck, Cupertino, Calif., national road race champion Louisa Jenkins, Boulder, Colo., and Tour Feminin stage winner Dede Demet, also of Boulder. Rounding out the team are Mari Holden, Colorado Springs, Colo., the top American in the women’s Giro d’Italia; and the country’s two premier road sprinters, Karen Livingston, Gainesville, Fla.; and Kendra Wenzel, McKenzie Bridge, Ore.
In the individual time trial, the U.S. will be represented by two of the following three riders: two-time national champion Holden, 1994 world champion Kurreck and current national champion Elizabeth Emery, New York, N.Y.
The men’s under-23 team will be led by Christian VandeVelde, Lemont, Ill., a triple 1997 national champion on the track who also won the overall World Track Cup individual pursuit title. Also among the U.S. U-23 team are Brent Aucutt, Clovis, N.M., the under-23 time trial champion and Steve Cate, Norman, Okla., the under-23 road race champion.
The junior men’s team will be led by Josh Thornton, Greene, R.I., winner of the Tour de L’Abitibi Junior World Cup race; while the junior women’s team will be led by Shelly Orem, Whittier, Calif., a four-time junior national champion.
