1996 Burra Open Cycling Handicap

1996 Burra Open Cycling Handicap 125 Km

Saturday September 7

Cool windy conditions gave riders little relief as they battled 22Kn
cross winds on an out and back course through the rolling treeless
plains from Burra to Riverton and return.

Corey Sweet and Ben Biggs broke away from the scratch group soon after
the turn and bridged the gap to a strong "chopping block" group starting
at 5 minutes. The attack weakened the small sctratch (7) group which
disintegrated in the effort to chase. Four of the stronger riders worked
with Sweet and Biggs as they plowed through he field.

The last few kilometres saw an all out attack up the last hill by Sweet.
Riding 52/12 with a tail wind Sweet, Biggs and Clasohm broke from the
group. Veteran cyclist Malcolm Clasohm from Whyalla showed a suprising
will to win by sticking to Sweets wheel until the last 200m, kicking
over Sweet to take the win from last years first and fastest Sweet
followed by Biggs a short distance behind.
