Berzin - a monumental flop

Russia's Yevgeny Berzin gave up his attempt to beat the one-hour world cycling record after only 17 minutes on a Bordeaux track on Sunday.

The former Giro d'Italia winner, who had decided to tackle the record held by Briton Chris Boardman in 56.375 kms to honour a contract signed at the start of the season, pulled out when he realised his average speed after 14.850 kms was a lacklustre 51.958 kph.

Boardman set the current world mark in September last year in Manchester, using so-called "Superman" handlebars which have since been banned by the International Cycling Union (UCI).
