"They acted like they were tired and when I was tired of pulling and turned to ask for help Van Bon attacked. If I would have had the same attitude we would have been caught. Maybe I would have arrived feeling fresher and could have disputed a sprint among 10 or 12 with more strength and possibilities. But this is only a hypothesis. What I see clearly is that they acted like foxes".
Miguel Indurain who shot the starting gun and watched the whole development of the race admitted that Melchior Mauri raced a good race for the Spanish team. "They have been in every break but the terrain was not good for the Spaniards. I have been dissapointed by Italy because even though they controlled the race they didn't seem to have a clear plan" explained Indurain.
