Some Australian Insight

Rob Arnold wrote to me with some interesting background data about the two Australian riders in the ITT. He writes "A couple of things about the world TT champs last night... I spoke to the parents of both Aussies in the race and they had a few interesting things to note about the week preceeding the race: Wednesday was Jonathan Hall's 25th birthday. He spent the day doing nothing other than feeling sick. Henk has also been a little ill. He hadn't been able to ride a decent training ride since his race at Paris-Tours and had been off the bike for the three days leading up to the time trial. Speaking to Henk on Tuesday night he was clearly looking toward Sunday's race as the one that suits him more.

Reports

Frenchman Laurent Jalabert gave a surprise and with his sensational performance, beat the great favorites including his teammates Alex Zulle & Melchor Mauri, in the individual time trial of the World Championships. Laurent Jalabert won the gold medal when he covered the 42.8km in 52 minutes and 1 second, which translates into an average speed of 49.135 km.hr; while Ukranian Serguei Gontchar and British Christopher Boardman accompanied him on the podium.

The great defeat was for Swiss Alex Zulle, recent winner of la Vuelta a España and who rode defending the title that he won last year, but from the start bad luck became his friend. Practically from the start ramp he suffered a flat, which would influence his behavior in the rest of the race and then at km19, he had another flat. Russian Eugeni Berzin didn't ride as expected either, a rider with the class and style for the time trial, but didn't perform. Maybe because like he said a few days ago, the Worlds were sort of a test for his Hour Record attempt.

So the time trial became a "mano a mano" between Jalabert & Gontchar since the first time check (19.1km). At this point Gontchar passed with a time of 21:49 with Jalabert at 22:06. The other favorites, Boardman, Zulle, Peschel, Rominger and Mauri passed with a time larger than 22:10. The gap between Jalabert, (who used 54 & 44 chainrings, with a 11 to 21 cassette) and Gontchar increased, since at km27.2 the two rider kept increasing the differences with the favorites, where only Rominger showed any sort of form.

The last part of the race was exciting. It was the most difficult and theoretically more suited for the Ukranian, since he's a specialist and the small climb of Oriamendi almost at the finish. Luckily for Jalabert, the Ukranian paid for his previous effort and started to lose time in the last six kilometers, since he had to stand up on the bike to maintain his rhythm, which made him lose his aerodynamic advantage.

Jalabert maintained his rhythm and although he knew the time gaps, he didn't seem to worry, not even when he found out that he had the best time and that both Zulle and Boardman were suffering. In the end a splendid Jalabert took the gold by only 3 seconds over Gontchar, although he ridiculed the specialists, since Boardman needed 20 more seconds to take 3rd place, which he took from Rominger in the last few meters.

Melchor Mauri rode a good first half of the course and then faded away on the last section. He held third place overall for awhile. Also performing pretty bad was Juan Carlos Domínguez, since after a good first half he just sank and lost his rhythm to finish tenth more than 2 minutes from Laurent Jalabert.

Frenchman Laurent Jalabert captured his first world championship Thursday, winning the elite men’s individual time trial.

Jalabert covered the 43.8km course in 52 minutes, 1.19 seconds, a mere 3.32 seconds ahead of silver medalist Serguei Gontchar of Ukraine. Christopher Boardman of Great Britain was third, 20.53 seconds behind Jalabert.

Alex Zulle of Switzerland, the defending world champion and La Vuelta a Espana winner, had a difficult day, suffering mechanical problems and finished 11th, 2:15.37 behind Jalabert.

The top American finisher was national champion Jonathan Vaughters, Englewood, Colo., who finished 15th in a time of 54:47.82.

"I’m stoked," Vaughters said. "I hope I raised a few eyebrows just a little bit."

Vaughters raced for the Spanish-based Santa Clara team from 1994-96, but raced almost exclusively in the United States and trained by himself for the past five weeks for this event.

The other American entrant, Tyler Hamilton, Marblehead, Mass., finished 39th in 58:49.37.

Tomorrow action features the junior men’s and junior women’s road races. In the 67.5km junior women’s road race, the U.S. will be represented by Michelle Orem, Whittier, Calif., and Emily Hamilton, Louisville, Colo. In the junior men’s 121.5km race, the U.S. team includes Josh Thornton, Greene, R.I.; Derek Wilkerson, San Antonio, Fla.; and David Zabriskie, Salt Lake City, Utah.
