Banesto problems

The director of the Banesto cycling team has headed off potentially damaging criticism of the bank by accepting responsibility for Miguel Indurain's abortive participation in the Tour of Spain.

``It is to me that the criticism should be made,'' Jose Miguel Echavarri said on Monday, ``I advise my riders what I think is good, and if it turns out to be bad, I have to accept it.''

Banesto's corporate hospitality offensive accompanying the tour had threatened to backfire because of bad press resulting from the decision to force Indurain to ride this month's race, and his subsequent retirement just after the half-way stage.

The five times Tour de France winner has already announced that he will not compete in the forthcoming world championships and is currently considering his future at his seaside villa.

Echavarri said he would not try to influence Indurain in making his decision.

He also acknowledged the possibility of signing world road-race champion Abraham Olano from the Mapei team.

``Olano has assured me that he would like to ride alongside Indurain and help him to win the sixth Tour de France,'' Echavarri said.
