More on that Tony Rominger transfer

The reason for Tony Rominger's surprising step to sign with Cofidis was the hesitating attitude of Mapei boss Giorgio Squinzi towards a new contract for Rominger.

"First it was said that my contract will be lengthened after the Tour de France, then the Vuelta and the World Championships followed without detailed talks", Rominger said at a bike event in Geneva on Tuesday. This was the reason for his fast agreement with the Cofidis offer which was made after the Tour of Lombardy.

With his new team, Rominger hopes for a motivation push in the final year of his career. He wants to play a role as "chef du route" who helps the mainly young riders of Cofidis to learn in the pro business.

His program with Cofidis will include serveral races in France and Spain - and participation in the Tour de France. "Cyril Guimard promised me that I don't have to ride for the general classification but that I can concentrate on stages", Rominger said.

So far, 18 riders have signed a contract with Cofidis, but beside Rominger and Lance Armstrong there are no real top riders. Rumours say Guimard is on the hunt for another well-known cyclist.
