Dutch still top bicycle ownership league

While the number of bicycles worldwide increased to one billion last year, the flat and tiny Netherlands continues to boast the highest per capita ownership.

According to figures published by the Dutch automotive industry association (RAI), there are 16 million bicycles in The Netherlands -- roughly one per person.

China has 450 million, one per 2.6 people; the United States has 99 million and Japan 77 million. India has 31 million bicycles, one per 16.7 people.

Global production of bicycles last year was 108 million, including a record European output of 13.7 million.
