Pacific Power-Commonwealth Bank Cycling Classic
Stage 2 News and Results
Early news is the race split into two groups today on the climb up Mooney
Mooney. About 10 riders went out the back including past winner Mike Weissman
(Germany) and Dutchman Michel Zanoli. After a late attack by Swede Micheal
Andersen, the race into the finish at The Entrance on the Central Coast of NSW
came down to a bunch sprint.
Dutchman Max Van Heeswijk, riding for the American Motorola team won easily
from another Dutchman, Jan Koerts followed by British rider Chris Lillywhite.
Van Heeswijk took over the Under 23 Jersey, but the GC yellow jersey
was retained by British rider Jeremy Hunt, who also took the first KOM jersey.
Points jersey went to another British rider John Tanner.
There were three KOM sprints. The first at the top of the 8 km climb out of the
Hawkesbury River was won by Jeremy Hunt who took a 6 second time bonus, second
was Julich the Motorola rider who took a 4 second bonus, and John Tanner
(Hunt's teammate) was third. The second KOM was the 5 km Mooney Mooney climb on
the Peat's Ridge loop. Local rider Jason Pearce took the sprint with Tanner
then George Hincapie. Hunt was 4th picking up another second. The next time
round the climb was won by Hunt, then Hincapie and Tanner. So at the end of the
stage Hunt had the KOM and the GC, so Tanner wore the KOM jersey into stage
3.
