Pacific Power-Commonwealth Bank Cycling Classic
Stage 14 Goulburn to Canberra -116.4 kms
The warmest and sunniest day of the tour. 70 riders out of 80 starters left
Goulburn for the penultimate stage of the tour. It was a very slow start.
Animation
came when AIS-Giant rider Allan Iacuone (a former National road champion) and
Adrian Nolan (ACT-Casino Canberra) attacked. They held a long break and were
caught on the only KOM climb over the fairly steep Smith's Gap which is just
west
of Bungendore.
It was clear that the bonus points on offer over the climb were of interest to
third
on GC Bobbie Julich and yellow jersey holder John Tanner. Julich took the KOM
sprint and consolidated third place overall, and Tanner who started with a 1
sec
lead over team-mate Chris Lillywhite on GC came over the climb second and
extended his lead to 5 seconds.
Heyderick (Pacific Power World team) attacked inside the suburbs of Canberra
and held the bunch off until the last 200 metres. The bunch had lined all their
sprinters up and away they went. George Hincapie the New Yorker with
Colombian parentage outsprinted Ric Reid with German Mike Weissman, coming
into form late in the tour, third.
