Indurain abandons plan for second record attempt
Indurain eventually abandoned plans for a second hour record attempt
today (16 October) one strategy for which was to go to Cali (1500m) where
there is a 250m covered track. "It's wiser to abandon the attempt," said
Indurain, "I feel tired. At Bogota the wind and weather conditions are
too problematic. And at Cali, I would go back to a 250m track where I would
be less at ease because of the tighter bends which I'd have to negotiate
more often. It would probably also be necessary for me to wait three days
or more to adapt to the new altitude.
Frankly, I don't have the spirit for that. To carry on would be a waste of
time. I've staked everything on today {Sunday] and missed out on my
objective, and I don't see why I should succeed the next day. But there's
nothing dramatic in this -- I've lost other races that are much more
important."
Indurain leaves for Paris via Miami today [Monday] and will arrive Paris 9am
Tuesday in time for the presentation of the 1996 Tour de France route. "I
don't know what state I'll be in, very tired probably, but I must be there."
Then home where his wife is due to give birth to their first child in a month.

Jeannie Longos attempt to recapture the hour record currently held by
Britains Yvonne McGregor (47.441km) is scheduled to take place on
Wednesday (October 18) in Bogota. Whatever the result of this attempt,
Longo will fulfil a contract to attack the record again on the Stuttgart track
at the end of the month.

(167 starters, 131 finishers. Principal non-starters: Leblanc--Polti, S.

Cloudy at the start, rain in mid-race, sunny at the finish
**After a first vain attack from Pretot (GAN) a first break of 29 riders emerged
at 11km including Minali and several of his Gewiss team-mates, Museeuw with
several Mapeis. Sixteen of the 22 teams were represented in the break and it was
left to Lotto and Motorola, who were not represented, to wind up a vigorous
pursuit which dropped several riders off the back of the peloton. The gap
bewtween the 29 and the peloton rached 55 seconds at km40 and it was only at
km61 that the junction was made. The easing of the pace that followed allowed a
group of those who had been dropped, including French champion Eddy Seigneur
(GAN) to rejoin the peloton.
**After the regrouping, Anti (Mutuelle de Seine-et-Marne) attacked at Bonneval
(km66) but was quickly brought back. At km76 his team-mate Stephane Cueff broke
clear, receiving the assistance of Seigneur at km85. The break of two's lead
stretched to 16 minutes at km123.
**The peloton took a long time to react to any efffect and Cueff and Seigneur's
lead was still 13.25 at the feed 100km from the finish. But then the initiative
of the Gewiss, Telekom, Novell and TVM teams rapidly brought their lead down --
8 mins at 50km to go, then 1.30 at 25km. Cueff was caught at km 229 and Seigneur
a little later with 15km to the finish.
**Fodriest (Lampre) attacked in the last climb followed by Minali (Gewiss),
Museeuw (Mapei) and Missaglia (Brescialat). Museeuw and Missaglia kept forcing
to 900m from the line when they were engulfed by the sprint which Minali took
cleanly.
Quote of the day: Fondriest--"Every year I try to get away on this climb. This
year I tried to wait just a little longer. But I had Minali in my wheel and he
didn't want to work on a break. I've already had a third at Chaville [when the
same race was Blois-Chaville], third at Tours, then second behind Museeuw. I
hope that I'll end up winning."

Coupe de France
With last Thursdays Paris-Bourges race, won by the Italian Daniele
Nardello, the season-long Credit Agricole-sponsored Coupe de France
competition for French pros comes to an end. Twelve of the 14 races in the
competition have been won by foreigners (including five by the Belgians of
Lotto) and French riders have not particularly distinguished themselves in
the placings, so the prize goes to Armand De Las Cuevas, who has not
ridden a Coupe de France race since the spring when he won the Trophee
des Grimpeurs (and nothing at all since the Tour de France). De Las Cuevas
amassed 68 points in the competition (with Virenque second with 67 and
Mengin third with 65) to take the FF50,000 (US$10,000) first prize. The big
difficulty now, LEquipe wryly comments, will be to find De Las Cuevas to
present him with the trophy and prize money. Having fallen out with
Castorama manager Cyrille Guimard his last-known address was Navarre,
but maybe hes at home in Bordeaux, or in Italy, which he regularly visits...

Banesto vs ONCE: La Guerra Continua
When ONCE signed 19-year-old Miguel Morras, last years junior world
champion, Banestos Jose-Miguel Echavarri was not best pleased. "Theyre
signing some riders not because they want Spaniards in the team, but in
order to dismantle Banesto," LEquipe reports him complaining. "Id also
like two buses like the ones that accompany the ONCE team," he grumbled
on, "but I still prefer to invest our money in an amateur team." Manolo Saiz,
who has signed Morras, an excellent climber, but also a good rouleur, for
four years didnt take Echavarris remarks lying down. "I simply made an
offer to a rider who hadnt yet been signed for 1996. So I cant have
deprived Banesto of a rider."
