More on the Hour the Attempt

Miguel Indurain abandonded his Sunday-morning record attempt after having
covered between 25 and 30 kilometers, he was then 44 seconds down on Tony
Rominger's times from Bordeaux 1994. However, Indurain is planning to try
again, Monday morning, Oct 16, 6 am local time. Here are Indurain and
Rominger compared; Indurain was up on Rominger after 5 km and then he
started to lose time.

Atlanta Cycling Invitational

Stone Mountain Velodrome, Atlanta, Georgia

Day Two - ACOG Searching for Options

After the first day of the Atlanta Cycling Invitational was moved back to
Saturday due to non-stop misty rain, the second chance to start may not end
up a total washout. If the rain abates (predicted for about 2 pm Saturday)
organizers may be prepared to run under the lights. In the shade of
Georgia's Stone Mountain Monument, the new Olympic velodrome was designed
as strictly a day-use, temporary facility - having no permanent lighting -
but generator-driven construction lighting is still on site and more units
have been ordered for this situation. If the weather clears and the
lighting is up to snuff, the race will be with an abridged program.

The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG) first apparent concern
is that UCI certification of the new velodrome has not been finalized. Only
after the has been raced on can it be officially approved for Olympic
competition. Other than that, the international riders may have problems
with airline scheduling if the races carry over to Monday and Tuesday with
the regional riders possibly moving up to top of the marquee.

In the meantime, the track has been under fitted vinyl covers and as an
extra precaution the apron has a new plastic sheet covering to keep the
newly sodded infield from washing away. If the cold front pushes through
late this afternoon, the only remaining problem will be the strong winds
predicted to replace the rain.

Riders have been absent from the facility for the most part, but when they
appear at the time each delay runs out, all seem to be in good spirits.
Rollers and soggy road rides in the area are the only in-the-saddle
activities, and some have been searching the neighborhood for alternatives
for their free time.

One group chose the Road Atlanta motorcycle races - 40 minutes away by car.
Unlike the human-powered bikes, the motorcycles were resigned to run in the
rain (after a flurry of activity installing rain tires), with a four hour
endurance event Friday and motocross racing in the infield and superbike
racing on Saturday and Sunday.

Gregorz Krejner (Poland) won the one-kilometer Atlanta Cycling Invitational
on Saturday (14 Oct 95) with a time of 01:6.272, a day after rain delayed
the start of the competition. Bogdan Bondarev (Ukraine) was second with a
time of 1:06.853, and Jose Escuredo (Spain) was third in 1:07.051. Erin
Hartwell (U.S.) finished fourth in 1:07.076.

Galina Enuhina (Russia) topped the women's 200-meter flying time trials
with a time of 11.772 seconds. Jose Moreno (Spain) won the men's race in
10.475.

In the men's individual pursuit qualifying race, Andrei Iasenko (Ukraine)
beat Mariano Frederick (U.S.) with a time of 4:36.054. Both Iasenko and
Frederick qualified for the final round.

Rebecca Twigg (U.S.) qualified in 3:49.521 to move into the finals in the
top spot.
