Men's ITT, 40 kms:

Australian Jonathan Hall (who is current National Road Champion and world duathlon champion, and 8th place in the World ITT) did not have a good day in the men's 40 km ITT. He managed third place 41 seconds behind the winner New Zealand's Lee Vertongen.

He is reported to have said he was uncomfortable for the whole race. "It's hard to put my finger on what went wrong. I've really been at the top of my form for the last three months and I suppose it's difficult to maintain it for that long."

Vertongen (22), who is current NZ individual pursuit champion, was ecstatic because he now has automatically qualified for next year's World Championships for NZ. He has only just recovered from a broken collarbone which he sustained in a MTB accident 5 weeks ago.

By the 10 kms mark he had 3 seconds on Hall, going to 5 at 20 kms, 25 at 30 kms and finally 41 seconds.
