The Banesto team plans to start in Tour and Vuelta. Abraham Olano and Spanish champion Jose Maria Jimenez Sastre are the leading riders.

Drug raids at Grenoble Six - No arrests ... Yet!

On Tuesday afternoon, police from the French drug squad unexpectedly raided the Palais des Sports where the Grenoble six day race was being held. The police searched the "catacombs" of the Palais des Sports where the clothing and rest rooms for the riders are located. The raid came on the last night of the Race.

According to the regional newspaper, Dauphiné Liberé the police found suspected substances under a mattress, and have taken them to a laboratory for analysis. One Belgian rider was interrogated by the police. A further search of the rooms in the Sports Stadium then led to the questioning of 8 riders. As at Wednesday, there had been no arrests as yet made.

Cyclo Cross Superprestige circuit

The first round of the Superprestige circuit for 1997-98 will begin in Gavere on November 16. The other races are at Sint-Michiels-Gestel (NL), Gieten, Cilgella, Milan, Overijse, Diegem, Wetzikon and Harnes. Harnes is the final race on February 8.

10 Riders have so far entered all the races which has a total prize pool of 1.5 Belgian Francs (around $US50000). Among these are Belgians Sven Nijs, Erwin Vervecken and Mario De Clercq, Dutchmen Richard Groenendaal and Adri Van der Poel, and Italian World Champion Daniele Pontoni.
