Olano talked about this on his exit from the hospital, "I had an internal infection was going to continue to affect me irrespective of the amount of antibiotics I took. Now that throat problem is taken care of".Olano said that he's not thinking about the next season yet: "First I need to talk with José Miguel Echávarri and we won't talk about the calendar until after the team presentation". After the operation, the medical coordinator for Banesto at la Clínica Universitaria de Navarra, José Calabuig, said that after seeing the state of the tonsils that he could almost positively assure that this was the problem which caused his physical deficiencies last season. Calabuig remembered that there was talk about Olano having over-trained and that this was the source of his problems and mentioned that: "it doesn't stop being the truth, because there has been a large effort made by an individual who was not in good physical shape and suffering from a chronic infection". "It has been a matter, not of a cyclist's typical over-training which is usually due to too many kilometers ridden, but of a rider that has an infection and has forced himself like we saw at the Tour, where his character helped him finish the race, where others would have retired halfway". In Calabuig's opinion, Olano's attitude at the Tour (where he finished 4th) "was very gutsy and professional, because one of his tonsils was in an advanced stage of infection". The doctor, who assured that the post-operative process will be very simple explained that he has recommended that during the coming week Olano stay away from cold food and drinks so as to avoid any irritation to the scar and not to do any weight exercises for 3 or 4 days. In one week, after he finishes taking a course of antibiotics, which will provoke some physical weakness, Olano will be able to resume training normally.
