No decision yet from Miguel

Five times Tour de France winner Miguel Indurain has not yet reached a decision about his future.

``Many things have been said or written,'' Indurain was quoted as saying by French sports paper L'Equipe on Monday. ``Maybe too much, because I haven't decided anything yet.''

Speculation has been rife that the 32-year-old Spaniard, who showed increasing signs of weariness this year and lost his Tour de France crown to Denmark's Bjarne Riis, might make a big-money switch to the ONCE team or even quit altogether.

``I have reached a turning point in my career, perhaps in my life. I must weigh up the pros and cons carefully, to know if I should stop (cycling) or if I should carry on.''

Although Indurain won the Olympic time trial after his Tour disappointment, his bid to re-establish his authority in the Tour of Spain in September led to more anguish as he abandoned the race on the 13th stage.

His Banesto team director Jose Miguel Echavarri has said he wanted to keep the Spaniard but needed a decision so that he might build his team for 1997.

``I saw him (Echavarri) a few days ago. We had a lengthy conversation and at the end of it, he told me: ``Tell me yes or no','' Indurain told L'Equipe. ``What could I do? I still don't know if I'll be a cyclist in 1997.''

His decision has been complicated by the overtures of Banesto's arch-rival, wealthy Spanish stable ONCE, who are so keen to team him with Swiss Alex Zuelle and Frenchman Laurent Jalabert that some reports suggest an offer worth $9.8 million for one year's work.

Indurain acknowledged that ONCE had made him a generous offer.

``Money is important, that's how we earn our living, but I've reached a point where a bit more or a bit less would not make much difference,'' he said.

``I really don't know what I'll do but all I can say is that I will not let anybody else decide for me.''
