Doping allegations denied

Italy's national Olympic committee (CONI) denied on Thursday that it had allowed a report on doping in Italian cycling to gather dust.

The report was prepared by Sandro Donati, secretary of the CONI's scientific committee on doping, and submitted to CONI president Mario Pescante in February 1994.

It reportedly named riders, their doctors and sporting directors involved in the use and prescription of banned drugs, according to the Italian press.

But a CONI spokesman denied the report had been droppped, saying: "We have not had our eyes closed, but neither did we want a witch hunt.

"We have carried out a meticulous investigation over the past few years and we are contact with Dr. Donati and other doctors.

"The CONI is working extremely hard in the fight against doping and two commisons have been created on the subject since 1993."
