Race Report
Australian profesional Chris White took over the lead in the Colonial
Cycle Classic on a day when German Marcel Wust showed his star
qualities.
White finished fourth behind Wust in the 126km stage from Paihia to
Whangarei yesterday.
While he was the last of a four man breakaway to cross the line, White
was far enough ahead of previous tour leader Glen Mitchell and stage
runner-up Rik Reinerink of the Netherlands to snatch the leader's
yellow Jersey by a few seconds.
White who started the day 37s behind Mitchell is 3s clear of
Reinerink, who was 44s down at the start of the day. Mitchel is a
further 5s back.
Wust was an easy stage victor, taking time to look over his shoulder
as he coasted down the finishing straight, his arms loosely swinging
by his side. He gained 11s on Reinerink and Gary Anderson, with White
a further 4s back. Mitchell led the bunch in at 51s down on Wust.
Today the field races from Manukau to Hamilton, 170km through rolling
farm land in south Auckland. -- NZPA
