STAGE FIVE COMMENTARY
=====================

   Stage 5 : Thursday, 2nd November
131 km Strand, Sir Lowry's Pass, Botriver, Kleinmond,
   Gordon's Bay, Strand

A Swede's Lone break - Will it Succeed ?

From the video:

The rainy weather doesn't seem to be affecting the attacking resolve
of the riders. The bunch set off in misty and rainy conditions and
at the foothills of the first pass, Sir Lowry's Pass, Three riders
broke away : Ralf Koldewitz (hameln-kontor-7) and Jacques Fullard
(coroma doors) and Patrick Laverty (team collet) who was dropped as
soon as the road went up.

Koldwitz takes the KOM points as Fullard is content to sit back and
try put his rain jacket on over the top. the weather and mist remind
me of Steven Roche's last stage win in the Tour. On the slippery
descent Hans kurt-Brand (swi-tandem team) slides and crashes out.
his helmet is cracked through at the back and his wrist badly
  bruised.

At the hotspot in Kleinmond, Koldewitz goes through first with
Fullard second. a fast charging Backstedt takes third.

Backstedt can now see the 2 riders up ahead. He swings in behind
them and attacks again so that he goes straight past. He has closed
  the 1min gap in 5km

Back at the peleton ONCE are still present at the front of the bunch
obviously happy with the current position, figuring they will sweep
up Koldwitz and Fullard and Backstedt near the finish.

At 30km to go they do just this except...Backstedt is still up
front. His manager Tommy Sigg giving time gaps all the while.

The peleton are 2.5min back and closing. after 60km with 15km to go
the gap is now reduced to 1.5min

Backstedt is now all out and the effort shows on his face. 4km to go
and the gap is now 30 seconds.

Telekom are doing the lead out as they approach the line. Backstedt
is just up ahead with one more traffic circle to negotiate. Magnus
breaks for the line glancing back to check the whereabouts of the
big "T". he raises his arms and exuberantly crosses the line 15
seconds ahead of the fast closing bunch.

Jurgen Werner brought to the front, goes hard and starts the sprint
for second. Malcolm Lange and Hendrik Redant are on his tail. Lange
can't match his speed but Redant moves up to take 3rd place with
  Lange 4th.

Backstedt is meanwhile recovering on the tarmac, just past the
finish, from his solo effort. Congratulations are forthcoming from
all. Paul Sherwin conducts an interview once he has recovered.

  Q. Magnus, magnificent ride. did you think you could stay away ?
  A. "I wasn't sure but I wanted to try. I was also a bit lucky to
  stay away."

  Q. When you came up to the other 2 riders you went straight past
them ?
  A. "Yeah..if I stayed with them they would have come with me and
possibly beaten me in the finish."

  Q. Did you know the main field was so close ?
  A. "At 10km I heard that they were closing fast and I wasn't sure
exactly how close until the finish line."

  Q. How does it feel to take this win in such a good field?
  A. "It feels very good."

     SWEDE LEAVES PELOTON STANDING
By: Bryan Grieve, "THE ARGUS", 3/11/1995, pp 22 reprinted without
permission, but full
reference and credit given.

A magnificent solo, and winning, ride by super swede Magnus
Backstedt was on of the few features on the 5th day of the Boland
    Bank Cycle Tour.

The Swede, a good friend of racing in the Western Cape, showed
confidence and resilience beyond his 20 years as he reeled off
75km on his own to win by 15 seconds ahead of a pack that chased
over the last few kilometres, but were unable to catch the Lanken
team rider. It was good riding by Backstedt, who rode in this
year's Giro del Capo and Argus/Pick 'n Pay Tours. Backstedt, whose
manager informally told the media earlier in the week his rider
would win a stage, let others forge the early trail.

In the second circuit around the Strand, before the field headed
for the country and an abundance of rain, 3 riders did just that.
Up Sir Lowry's Pass went German Ralf Koldewitz, winner of the
first two stages and South African amateurs Jacques Fullard and
Patrick Laverty. the latter didn't take to the pace and fell back
long before the mist-shrouded prime. Eventually, in the surrounds
of Betty's Bay, Backstedt caught the leaders, going around them
with hardly a glance and raced away on his own. Early leader

Koldewitz and Fullard were eventually swallowed by the peleton.
Spaniard Arnanoia Garcia (ONCE) leads overall by 2 seconds from
Douglas Ryder of the Old Mutual national team a further second off
    the pace.
