Hour Record Attempt by Nico Emonds

Belgian rider Nico Emonds, 34, a former team-mate of Tony Rominger and now a member of the modest Espace-card team, managed 51.801km in an hour record attempt at the Bordeaux track yesterday (13 November). Well short of Tony Romingers 55.291km, Emonds distance was nevertheless the seventh-fastest recorded and gives him the esoteric distinction of becoming the fastest Belgian over the hour, since he surpassed Eddy Merckxs 1972 49.431km.

__________________________ A memorial stone to Fabio Casartelli -- placed at the spot where he crashed on the Col de Portet dAspet on 18 July on the initiative of the Motorola team and the Societe du Tour de France -- is to be unveiled today (14 November). Casartellis widow and family will attend the ceremony.
